Happy National Banana Split Day! August 25 is a day to celebrate the delectable dish – which traces its origins right next door to Idlewild in neighboring Latrobe. According to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, the "first documented banana split was created by apprentice pharmacist David Strickler" and sold at the former Tassell Pharmacy. Bananas had only recently become widely available to the American public near the turn of the century, leading to the emergence of the sweet treat and its newfound flavors.
Idlewild isn't open today, so we're celebrating our world-famous local dessert tomorrow! All 2023 and 2024 Season Passholders can purchase a banana split for half price tomorrow - Saturday, August 26 - between 12PM - 6PM. Take a break from a late August day with this frosty summertime staple at the Olde Idlewild Cyclone Creamery. Featuring a fresh banana split down the middle with ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate and strawberry syrup and - of course - cherries on top!
"Both Idlewild and the banana split have been part of the Greater Latrobe Area community for more than 100 years," says Tasha Pokrzywa, Communications Manager. "We'll split the cost of the summertime staple with Passholders this Saturday as we celebrate an important part of our hometown heritage!"
While this special offer is for one-day only, 2024 Platinum Passholders get 50% off most food purchases the entire rest of the 2023 Season! Save $40 on yours today to enjoy unlimited access to Idlewild through the 2024 Season, including HALLOWBOO!, before the price goes up.
